Great news! FOSS Backstage Design will also be back in 2025. On March 12 we will host the one day event in Berlin at bUm.
In the morning, we’ll kick things off with a small number of curated talks .
In the afternoon, the event will adopt a barcamp format, where participants can shape the program. This flexible structure allows everyone to bring their own ideas, topics, and challenges to discuss. This year we had sessions dealing with:
design methods
user research
how to incorporate Design into product development
writing good documentation
testing and measuring usability
and even how to design for XR leveraging the power of OSS tools
I hope this list inspires you to bring your topic to FOSS Backstage Design 2025!
You may also want to ckeckout the video recordings form this years event on youtube.
Come ready to connect, share, and collaborate. Check out more details on the website.
Please join us and bring your ideas! Tickets are available here, regular tickets start at 35€.
If you also join FOSS Backstage on March 10 and 11, you can add a discounted FOSS Backstage Design ticket while registering for your FOSS Backstage ticket.
I hope to meet many of you in Berlin!
PS: At the time of writing we are still looking for sponsors who would allow us to record and/or live stream FOSS Backstage Design.
I’m Aishat (preferred Maya), the lead design maintainer with the AsyncAPI Initiative, an open-source community. I also serve on our Code of Conduct and Technical Steering Committees.
I’m looking forward to submitting a talk for the conference! I wanted to check if there will be any travel sponsorship for main speakers and co-speakers. I’m thinking about teaming up with another design lead from the open-source space to present on topics like design in product development or usability testing and measurement.
Hi Maya,
Unfortunately our budget does not allow for travel sponsorships. We also did not do a call for papers this year. Of course everyone is free to bring ideas for a session to the barcamp. But I know this isn’t an option if you can travel to Berlin…
I have an update on this years FOSS Backstage Design:
We will kick off the event with three hand-picked talks, followed by lunch and a barcamp in the afternoon.
We are super excited to have Marta Marczykowska-Górecka, UX lead for QubesOS, as a speaker. She will tell us in her talk “Beyond Looking Good: How To Talk To Developers About Design”.
Additionally, Martin Keary, VP of Product at Muse, will share his insides on UX Design. At Muse he has been responsible for the Open Source application MuseScore, the most popular software for musical notation, as well as the well-known open source audio editor Audacity.
Our third talk will be announced soon. Follow FOSS Backstage Design on social media or subscribe to our newsletter to not miss the announcement.
At the barcamp everyone is invited to bring their session ideas. After a short round of session pitches, the most popular proposals will be put onto the schedule.
You can get an idea of the topics others might bring to the barcamp by checking out the recordings from last years conference.
Tickets for FOSS Backstage Design are available from our website. Get yours before March 5th while standard tickets are available.
On March 10 and 11 FOSS Backstage, our conference for all non-technical aspects of Open Source Software takes place. If you want to join both events we recommend to get your tickets from the FOSS Backstage ticket shop in order to benefit from a discounted price.
