@ei8fdb
Yes. I meant devroom for both days.
We could spread it out.
I thought the panel discussions from last year were very good.
How many talks did we get last year?
1 day sounds like the majority. @ei8fdb what do you feel?
@victoria-bondarchuk@belenbarrospena@ei8fdb
For Submitter's affinity to the topic of the devroom I meant whoever has their contact listed as the primary one should fill it up.
I can fill in my details there if everyone thinks that’s ok.
I don’t know anything about core@opensourcedesign.net. It would be great if someone can verify that.
If the rest of the proposal looks okay to everyone would be great to submit it before the deadline, say 15th September?
I agree with @belenbarrospena and @victoria-bondarchuk about the number of days. In order to cover 2 days we’d need more volunteers and to receive more submissions.
@amit.lzkpa Our (ALL of us!) affinity to the topic is our interest in design in open source.
Please, go for it and submit yourself as the main organiser! I think it’s more than ok: it’s great. We are very thankful that you have volunteered to organise this year and are willing to take the initiative.
About the proposal, I have a couple of comments:
Since it is not guaranteed we will have a booth / stand (we need to apply), maybe that paragraph should change to explain how we’ve had a stand for the past 2 years, which included the design clinic activity.
Because the 2 types of architects are together here, I got a bit confused while reading it and at the beginning I thougth it was a typo Maybe we could change it to something like “(building and information) architects”. Just a suggestion, really: I don’t think it’s a big deal.
As per the discussion above, this would be changed to “Full day”
Primary contact and secondary contact
As I said above, I would encourage @amit.lzkpa to become the primary contact with @victoria-bondarchuk or @ei8fdb as the secondary one. Please use your own personal email addresses! Although this is organised on behalf of the OSD community, it is individuals who take responsibility for it, and their own email addresses should go in the submission.
And finally, about the “Submitter’s affinity to the topic of the devroom”, well @amit.lzkpa is a designer, a member of the community, attended the devroom last year, volunteered to organise the devroom this year and has the support of the community to do so (we can add the url of this thread as evidence of that). If that is not a stellar recommendation, what is!?
Would be great if the secondary contact can fill in their details.
Hope we are able to submit it by September 15th evening.
Thank you all for the encouragement!
Title of devroom
Open Source Design
Elaborate description of proposed devroom (including possible topics)
Open Source Design is a community of designers and developers advocating more open, human-centered and participatory design processes within free and open source software. We understand “design” in a broad sense, and our community includes interaction designers, content experts, design researchers, architects, graphic designers, usability and user experience professionals, and of course software developers. What we all share is the conviction that engaging users in the process of developing software results in better software.
The goal with our devroom is to showcase design work done within free and open source projects, and strengthen the connections between designers involved in FOSS. We dedicate an hour to project pitches, so that projects looking for design contributions can introduce themselves and establish contact with designers eager to help. It will be an opportunity for developers and designers to ask questions and maybe seek advice on diverse aspects of design - from usability testing to typography - to an audience of designers who have a mix of skills and experience both in commercial and FOSS projects.
Open Source Design has been present at FOSDEM since 2015, when we organised our first devroom. Our main purpose is advocating human-centered design within FOSS. Our devrooms have been well attended, and we have seen strong demand for design contributions. The design clinic last year gave us the opportunity to engage more actively with projects, and created opportunities for stable and long-term collaborations between designers and FOSS projects.
Hey. Thanks @amit.lzkpa for handling the paper submission. It’s great to have more people involved in organizing. Thanks @belenbarrospena, @ei8fdb, victoria-bondarchuk for helping.
I had a look at the checklist and it looks like there is nothing pressing to be done till we hear back from about our proposal.
If it gets accepted the next important item in the checklist to get started with would be drafting the Call for Proposals for our devroom.
I was thinking of looking at last year’s CfP and stuff from the OSD devroom 2019 page and starting on a stub for this year.
Please let me know if you think I am missing something.
@belenbarrospena@ei8fdb@victoria-bondarchuk@evalica
Also I was thinking of using github project boards to manage the tasks in the future.
How does that sound to everyone?
Does anyone have any other preference?
Is there stuff like that in the discourse app?
You are right: next thing would be to prepare and issue the CfP, but I think you can wait until we hear from the FOSDEM organisers regarding the acceptance of the devroom. I believe that should happen tomorrow anyway.
About using GitHub for organising, we used to do that before, but we switched to the forum because it would make the process more accessible: not everybody is comfortable with GitHub. That was my understanding anyway: if I am wrong, please people correct me!
