Jobs - Second team member for user research

Role: Usability review & research

These are the things that I have done in the past. If you are experienced in doing user research or interested in doing something else, I invite you to not only follow the work I have done, but to propose and enhance the process we have established.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://opensourcedesign.net/jobs/jobs/2025-04-01-second-team-member-for-user-research

Hi, I am UX designer who has also carried out user research. I looked at the conversations and also briefly looked at the Forejo product. I’d be interested in learning more about this initiative. What help are you seeking, is it on the research front or the design front? What time commitment (hours/week or month) are you looking for?

Thanks!

Hi @Swetha00,

thank you so much for your interest.

What help are you seeking, is it on the research front or the design front?

Hmm, both is appreciated. Since I have been so far the only active contributor in that area, I always mixed user research and design in the process (e.g. doing user research, learning something that got me an idea; or designing something, than feeling like I lack insights and starting a user research call)

For the future, I hope we can improve the process, so that people working on a feature could ask questions that are either possible to answer based on existing research data, or that inspire future research work.

I scoped this specific call to help on research, because I must admit that I didn’t manage to do a lot of user research over the past months, and I’m seeing that we start to lack insights into user needs for some design decisions. However, there are also some design questions that are open for a long time, and help with those are definitely useful, too.

If you have a personal preference, please decide for yourself. Of course you are always free to change your focus over time.

What time commitment (hours/week or month) are you looking for?

There is general no obligation on specific commitments. Personally, I am definitely looking for a long-term co-contributor, maybe for several months or even more than a year. So far, I mostly did user research in bursts, e.g. one week with a lot of research sessions, than took a break. Depending on the process, a few hours per month would already help a lot.

If you prefer to only do one “project”, e.g. one sprint of research, this would also be a welcome contribution (!), but simply not the thing I had in mind when creating the call for help.

Thank you so much. Please let me know if you have further questions. If you want to talk to me, I happily invite you to schedule a meeting using my Nextcloud calendar or to drop me a personal note.

hi @fnetX, I read this whole thread and the scope & commitment sounds alright - I’m interested in contributing to your project as a researcher! Lemme know if you haven’t already found somebody

Hi, we’re still looking for contributions. We have three other interested people, but I believe it is good to build a team. And I honestly don’t expect that all interested contributors will actually stay.

Let me know if you would appreciate assistance getting started with the project.
