To be clear - what I’m looking for is an icon that can be used as an application icon. This would be used for the linux desktop entry, for app store listings, and documentation.
This means the icon should be a square SVG, which I will then use to export various sizes of PNGs as needed.
As I mentioned, I highly recommend following the Gnome HIG - https://developer.gnome.org/hig/stable/icon-design.html.en. They also provide a handy template for padding sizes - https://gitlab.gnome.org/Community/Design/HIG-app-icons/raw/master/template.svg
